Are Medical Practices Practices Selling In 2024?
Yes, medical practices are selling, particularly podiatry practices. Podiatry practices are outselling MD, DO, DC practices by far. Next in line would be chiropractors. Chiropractic practices are selling as well, but not as quickly as podiatry offices. This is interesting because there are under 20,000 podiatrists in the USA vs. 65,000 chiropractors.
So why are DPM practices selling so much faster than the rest?
The reasons for selling a podiatry practice vary. Retirement is not the #1 reason podiatrists sell, or at least not in our experience over the past 5 years, based on consulting with hundreds of DPM clients. Burn-out and unhappiness seem to be a major factor.
In Search Of A Better Quality Of Life?
After Covid, the lockdown, and the world being turned upside down, what we have seen within the podiatry community the most, is that a many of doctors, both sellers and buyers, are seeking to relocate to warmer climates, smaller cities, or even rural areas, and they are willing to leave these bigger cities with more income, in search of living a 'more peaceful life.'
How Important Is Asking Price When Selling A Medical Practice?
Obviously, this is very important, but we aren't trying to try to sell you a $5000 Valuation. The asking price needs to be reasonable to attract the attention of a buyer first and foremost. However, over the past few years, while the asking price is a major factor, there are other areas of the prace that many buyers are placing more value on.
Today's Value In The Mind Of Today's Buyers...
Within the DPM community, it appears that the location of the practice is slightly more important, than asking price in and of itself. This is very different than pre-Covid.
Has Value Of Podiatry Practices Changed?
Yes and no, in our humble opinion. And not in the sense of just Valuation or Fair Market Value. Rather, how do buyers of this generation perceive value? While numbers are numbers and still matter, today's buyers are in search of working where thy feel proud, have less stress, and more freedom to practice how they want to.
A big mistake both sides of the deal have made in the past, and still sometimes even now, is focusing too much on "the previous 12 months gross income," because VALUE HAS CHANGED with many buyers, and many buyers are now placing more value on...
Pay particular attention to the 3rd bullet point just above!
Know Your Leads!
As a seller, it's important to know who your "leads" are if you want to have a successful sale. The days of selling for a "percentage of your gross" may be coming to a grinding halt, if not already. It's important to focus on selling the practice, not a number.
The Importance Of Location & Fit!
In 2024, the trend that we continue to see is that LOCATION and FIT hold more value than anything else for buyers. ESPECIALLY with the under-40-year-old generation.
What Percentage Of Practices Sell?
Podiatry practices are selling, and we sell 77% of our practices within 6 months. The remaining 23% of practices that do not sell within 6 months, most of this group do eventually sell, roughly 18%-20% will eventually sell, but it could take much longer than 6 months. This is due to many reasons that we cannot control and is usually either a location issue or a seller-buyer conflict.
What Percentage Of Practices Do Not Sell?
3-5% may not sell at all because of location, lack of organization and plan, or not being reasonable. Or, in some cases, "surprises" that are uncovered in the due diligence process.
If your practice is not selling, or if you would like to sell your practice, please reach out to us to explore all of this in more depth. For buyers, we understand you and can help bridge the gap sellers and buyers.
For Sellers
So, you found a "buyer" to purchase your practice?
Congratulations! However, many times, attracting "leads" is the easy part.
There is a BIG difference between a "lead" and a "buyer."
LEADS ARE NOT BUYERS!
The truth is, we average 1-3 leads per listing each week. This varies of course, depending on location.
It can take 20-30-40 leads or more before a match is found!
There are practices that sometimes receive just ONE serious buyer and ONE serious offer! There are so many variables that may cause this to happen.
Considerations When Buying Or Selling A Medical Practice:
For Buyers
We have many buyers that contact us because they are frustrated that they cannot get past a certain point with a seller.
And this "point" is usually a "perceived" inflated asking price that the seller defends with its life.
Based on our experience, if a buyer and/or seller are only focusing on the price, a deal will almost NEVER happen because sellers and buyers NEVER agree on value!
If you are buying a practice, or trying to buy a practice, but are consistently ending up in stalled situations or abrupt endings, you need to identify why this is.
Any doctor who has tried to buy or sell a practice, fully understands that the challenges are far and above just locating a buyer or locating a practice to purchase. That's the easy part!
Reach out to us to see if there is a way that we can help you complete your sale. We do this for a living and chances are, your entire approach needs an overhaul.

Comprehensive Transition System Opportunities In The US
Our CTS program matches a selling-doctor with a buying-doctor that allows the selling-doctor to wind-down and make a slow exit and sell the practice to an associate doctor (buying-doctor), allowing a longer, slower transition and the opportunity for the buying-doctor to fully integrate with the staff and patients.
THESE PRACTICES ARE NOT FOR SALE OUTRIGHT. The average program duration 12-36 months and governed by strict contractual agreements.
